Hummingbird Feeder FAQs
Hummingbird feeders should be cleaned based on temperature, to prevent mold and bacteria growth. These are the recommended cleaning intervals:
70° to 84° F (21° to 28° C)… Clean every 3 days
85° to 89° F (29° to 31° C)… Clean every 2 days
90° F and over (32° and over)… Clean every single day!
In much cooler temperatures, cleaning once a week may suffice. This is only a guild. CHECK YOUR FEEDERS DAILY. If cloudy (bacteria) or black residue (mold), clean immediately.
Disassemble the feeder and wash all parts with hot water. Use brushes to scrub all areas in contact with the nectar.
Bottle brushes, tooth brushes, and small port brushes are the best tools. Using soap is not recommend as it can leave a residue which can be harmful to hummingbirds.
If you do see black mold, soak all feeder parts in a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water for 15 minutes.
Rinse very well with fresh water.
Keeping the outside of the feeder clean of drips or spilt nectar will help reduce bees and other insects.
Hang the feeder in a shaded area to slow down nectar spoilage. Position it near flowering plants to attract hummingbirds, and place it where you can easily observe and refill it. Make sure to use an ant moat filled with plain water to prevent ants from contaminating the nectar.
Hang the feeder about 4-6 feet above the ground. This height makes it accessible to hummingbirds while keeping it out of reach of most predators.
The recommended ratio is 1-part white granulated sugar to 4 parts water. For example, mix 1 cup of white sugar with 4 cups of water. Do not use raw or organic sugar, as it contains iron, and is harmful to hummingbirds. Extra nectar can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week.
You should change your nectar every time you clean the feeder, which is based on temperature. In hot weather, fill with less and change more often. Regularly changing the nectar prevents fermentation and mold growth, and keeps your hummingbirds healthy.
