As the summer season arrives, our feathered friends become more active, seeking nourishment and respite in our backyard bird feeders. To ensure their well-being and enjoyment, it's essential to maintain clean and safe feeding stations. In this article, we will provide you with valuable tips and techniques to keep your bird feeders in optimal condition during the summer months. Let's dive into the world of bird feeder maintenance and create a haven for our avian visitors!

1. Regular Cleaning: Regular cleaning is the cornerstone of bird feeder maintenance. Every one to two weeks, empty and thoroughly clean your feeders using a mixture of mild soap and warm water. Scrub away any dirt, debris, or mold that may have accumulated. Rinse them thoroughly and allow them to air dry completely before refilling.

2. Sanitize with Diluted Bleach Solution: To ensure proper hygiene, periodically sanitize your feeders. Prepare a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to nine parts water) and soak the feeder in it for about 10 minutes. Rinse the feeder thoroughly with clean water afterward and let it air dry. This process helps eliminate bacteria and prevents the spread of diseases among birds.

3. Avoid Overfilling: During the summer, when temperatures are high, it's best to avoid overfilling your bird feeders. Fill them with only enough seed that birds can consume within a day or two. This reduces the likelihood of seed spoilage, mold growth, and attracting unwanted pests.

4. Pest Management: Pests such as squirrels, raccoons, and ants are common challenges when it comes to bird feeding. Implement effective pest management strategies, such as using baffles or squirrel-proof feeders, elevating feeders on poles, or applying natural deterrents like cayenne pepper or petroleum jelly to feeder poles. Regularly monitor and address any signs of pest activity promptly.

5. Fresh Water Source: Birds require clean and fresh water for drinking and bathing. Provide a shallow birdbath or a water source near your feeders. Ensure that you clean and refill it frequently to prevent stagnant water and the breeding of mosquitoes.

6. Seed Quality and Rotation: Choose high-quality bird seed appropriate for the species you wish to attract. Opt for seed blends without fillers or cheap additives, as they tend to create more waste and attract unwanted birds. Rotate and use fresh seed regularly to maintain its nutritional value and prevent spoilage.

7. Observation and Maintenance Records: Observe the activity around your bird feeders and maintain records of the bird species you encounter. Note any changes in feeding patterns, unusual behavior, or signs of illness. Regular observation will help you detect any issues early on and take appropriate actions to address them.

How to Disassemble and Clean Your Birdfy
  1. Turn the antenna 90 degrees sideways to avoid damaging it. Unfasten the roof of your Birdfy and lift it up until it detaches.
  2. Remove the perch by unscrewing the perch screw in a counter-clockwise direction. If you have the Hummee extension attached, unclip the buckles on both ends of the Hummee extension and pull it out.
  3. Find the screw for the feeding tray at the back of the feeder body, just below the charging port. Unscrew it in a counter-clockwise direction and take off the feeding tray.
  4. Clean the roof, perch, and feeding tray in a bucket with a brush and soapy water.
  5. Use a long-handled brush to scrub the inside of the bird seed bin. Make sure that the silicone cover on the camera is securely sealed to prevent water from getting into the camera.
  6. Dry your Birdfy thoroughly before reassembling and using it.
