#BirdfyStory 100 Faces. 100 Encounters with Nature. I wasn’t always into hummingbirds, if fact it didn’t even know that they were in New Jersey. I was at a Bar B Q more than 10 years ago, and had a number of adult beverages, when this large insect kept buzzing me. I ask my host about the insect, and she said it wasn’t an insect, but a hummingbird. She took me to the side of her house and showed me her hummingbird feeders. I was fascinated. The next day I went to Home Depot and bought a Hummingbird feeder. Two days later I had them at my house. The rest is history… I have spent time in Nicaragua and Costa Rica studying Ruby-throated hummingbirds and assisting with their banding. Also have traveled within the US, and to Ecuador, Peru, Columbia, Panama, and Brazil to study and photograph indigenous hummingbirds. I am now a Federally permitted hummingbird researcher and have designed patent pending equipment to assist hummingbird banders. I got my first Birdy camera feeder in 2022, and added the hummingbird feeder extension. It recorded my first hummingbird of 2023, and the last, and I have been collecting data from it ever since. I have also taken a Birdfy hummingbird feeder to Panama and Ecuador to document new species for me. Hello everyone! I’m Gary from Upstate New York and a proud member of the Birdfy Community. I’ve always been fascinated by birds. About 25 years ago, I bought my first feeder—a simple tube-style window feeder that I placed outside the living room window of our apartment. I loved watching the birds come to eat and soon bought a field guide so I could identify the different species that visited. Our apartment building was built on an incline, and our bedroom window was level with the branches of a tree out front. I bought a spyglass and spent many hours watching the birds in those branches. When we finally bought our first house, one of the first things I did was put up a feeder pole right outside the living room window so I could continue enjoying the birds. Then, when we moved into another house ten years later, I did exactly the same thing. During the pandemic, I started watching live feeder stations on YouTube. During that difficult time of sheltering in place, I found comfort and peace in watching the birds. Their simple routines brought a sense of calm when the world felt anything but normal. Three years ago, my oldest daughter noticed how much I enjoyed birds and surprised me with my first Birdfy feeder—the Birdfy 1. Suddenly, I could see every visitor up close, and each new species that arrived brought a new sense of excitement. I found myself checking notifications like a kid looking for his decoder ring in the mail, wondering what might have landed at the feeder overnight. If I had to choose a favorite, it would have to be the Northern Cardinal. I’ve seen hundreds of cardinal visits to my feeder, but the last one brings me as much joy as the first one did. Not long afterward, I discovered the Birdfy Official Community and joined the group. Having spent 30 years entertaining people on radio and television, creativity has always been a part of who I am. Retirement gave me a new outlet for that creativity. I wasn’t content with simply posting photos or videos. I started creating stories to go along with them, adding fun touches like black-capped chickadees performing “gymnastics,” complete with clips of cartoon birds scoring their real-life antics. Before long, Birdfy reached out and asked me to test their Bamboo feeder. That opportunity eventually led to becoming a moderator for the community and writing articles for the Birdfy blog. Today, I still get excited every time my Birdfy captures something special, whether it’s a familiar backyard visitor or a species I’ve never seen before. I enjoy helping others through my role as a moderator, but what I love most is creating unique and entertaining presentations that bring a smile to people’s faces while celebrating these amazing birds. Long post ahead ! My Birdfy story started back in April of 2023, and honestly, I never imagined it would become one of my favorite hobbies. One day I saw a friend post a video of a bird at her feeder, and I was absolutely amazed. I immediately asked her what kind of feeder she had, and before long I had ordered my very first Birdfy camera. Well... you can probably guess what happened next! One camera quickly turned into two... then a few more... and today my collection has grown to more than 20 Birdfy cameras, including several birdhouses. Looking back, it's kind of funny how one little camera completely changed my daily routine. Living off-grid in Northern Michigan, we're surrounded by nature, but Birdfy gave me a whole new appreciation for it. My husband and I love sitting on our front porch listening to the birds sing, and now we get to watch them up close from just a few inches away. It's amazing how much personality each bird has, and how many little moments you would otherwise miss. What I didn't expect was how much this hobby would mean to me personally. Before Birdfy, I honestly didn't have a hobby that was truly mine. My husband and I have always loved working together on projects around our off-grid cabin, but Birdfy gave me something that was just for me—something I genuinely look forward to every single day. Even when that means taking them down every night and putting them out every day - because bears! Not only do I enjoy feeding the birds and other wildlife, but I love the excitement of never knowing who might show up next. Every morning feels a little like Christmas when I check my notifications to see who's been visiting. One of my favorite parts of birding is seeing species I've never seen before. This past winter I had Evening Grosbeaks visit my feeders for the very first time, and I can't even explain how excited I was. Seeing a bird I'd never had in my yard before was such a special moment, and it's those little surprises that keep me looking forward to the next day. Over the years we've had so many visitors. Of course there are all the beautiful birds, but we've also captured bears, foxes, wild turkeys, squirrels, chipmunks, and even our two regular raccoon visitors, Rocket and Rocky. Rocky is our newest little buddy, and despite missing one of his legs, he still comes by regularly and reminds me just how resilient wildlife really is. One of my favorite Birdfy memories happened this past winter during one of our brutally cold stretches. A Downy Woodpecker somehow ended up with a ball of ice frozen in its beak. My husband was able to gently catch the little bird, bring it inside to warm up, and once the ice melted, we released it back into the wild. Watching that little woodpecker fly away was a moment we'll never forget. Birdfy has become something I love sharing with everyone around me. My mom is just as hooked as I am and now has around 10 Birdfy cameras herself! Several friends and family members have one or two cameras now as well, and I have a feeling their collections will continue to grow just like mine did. Every February we spend about a month in Florida, and yes... my Birdfy cameras come with us! I always hope to capture all kinds of unique Florida birds, but somehow I mostly end up seeing cardinals and tufted titmice... just like back home! I guess the birds like to keep me humble. One thing I really enjoy is being part of the Birdfy community. I love seeing everyone's beautiful backyards, creative feeder setups, and all the amazing birds they capture. It inspires me to make my own setup even better, and I always look forward to the new contests Birdfy posts. Maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to win another feeder to add to my ever-growing collection! Lately things have been a little quieter around our cabin. With the wildfire smoke drifting down from Canada, many of our birds have disappeared for the time being. I never realized just how much I appreciated hearing their songs every morning until they weren't there. It's amazing how something you hear every day becomes part of your life without even realizing it. I truly hope they all return soon because the woods just don't feel the same without them. Bird watching has become so much more than just another hobby. It has taught me to slow down, appreciate the little things, and notice the beauty that's all around us every single day. It's given me something that's truly mine, while also becoming something my husband and I enjoy together. Whether we're sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee, watching a bear wander through, getting excited over a brand-new bird species, or simply listening to the morning chorus, Birdfy has created memories that I never expected from one little bird feeder. Hello everyone! From Pévèle, Nord, FranceFirst time here, and I've been a Birdfy owner for four days. What better way to get started than by sharing my #BirdfyStory ! Nothing extravagant, just a little girl from the north of France who grew up loving animals (like everyone here, I guess ). A few years ago, I started building feeders for the lovely birds living around our house! Then, to observe them more freely, I borrowed two of my father's surveillance cameras... I could finally watch them all: robin, sparrow, finch, blackbird, collared dove, dunnock, ...And recently, I discovered Birdfy! All I wanted to do was buy all of their products... I started with Birdfy in 2022 because I wanted my grandmother who moved into assisted living be able to still see & hear the birds. I would upload videos to her moving picture frame. The facility didn’t allow bird feeders there. That’s how I got started. These photos are from the beginning. Since then, by posting regularly about my birds & visitors, I became the local person to go to for help, inspiration & guidance for others to purchase their own Birdfy feeders. I’ve consulted with every day people on how to make their own yards more bird friendly. Recently I’ve become an environmental advocate & consultant to help our local wildlife thrive in an ever changing, forever under construction environment. My Birdfy story actually began long before I ever owned a Birdfy camera. It began when I was a child. My grandparents used to feed Blue Jays, Cardinals, and hummingbirds, and I was always fascinated by them. I loved watching them visit, even though I didn't know much about birds at the time. I didn't know that those childhood memories would stay with me and eventually grow into a passion of my own. Years later, when we bought our home, I started paying more attention to the birds in our backyard. I found myself sitting and watching them, wondering what they were doing, listening to their calls, and wanting to learn their names. The more I watched, the more curious I became about the amazing world happening right outside my own home. Eventually, I decided to put out a bird feeder and start feeding the birds myself. Before long, watching the birds became something I looked forward to every day. Then I started seeing advertisements for Birdfy. I decided to try a Birdfy camera feeder, and that became a turning point in my birding journey. Suddenly, I wasn't just watching birds from a distance. I could see their behaviors up close and capture moments that I might have otherwise missed. I began learning even more about the different species that visited my yard and became fascinated by how unique each one was. One Birdfy camera eventually turned into many. Today, I have a Birdfy birdbath, a nest box, a standalone camera, and three camera feeders. What started with a single feeder has turned into a full-blown hobby that I absolutely love. My Birdfy cameras have given me the opportunity to see parts of the birds' lives that I never would have experienced otherwise. One of my favorite things has been watching birds use my nest box. I've watched different species build their nests, and I love seeing how every bird has its own way of doing things. Each species seems to have its own style of nest building, its own behaviors, and even its own personality. I've watched birds become parents and seen how hard they work to protect, feed, and raise their babies. Watching that process unfold right in front of me has been incredible. It's made me appreciate these little creatures in a way I never expected. Birdfy has also allowed me to capture so many special moments along the way—moments I can go back and watch again and again. Sometimes the smallest moments are the ones that make me smile the most. My love of birding has even followed me to work. There is a quarry surrounded by tons of trees near my job, so now I find myself birdwatching there too. I listen for unfamiliar calls, watch the trees, and keep an eye out for birds I've never seen before. I even bring my binoculars because I never know what I might discover. One of my favorite parts of birding is keeping a list of birds I hope to see for the first time. There is something incredibly exciting about finally spotting a bird you've been hoping to see and getting to check it off your list. Every new bird feels like a little victory—and then I find myself adding another species to the list! I've never had too many hobbies in my life, but birding is one that I truly love. It has become part of my everyday life. I find myself listening for birds, watching them wherever I go, learning their songs, studying their behaviors, and wondering what I'll discover next. What I love most is that there is always something new to learn. Even birds I've seen countless times can surprise me with something new. Every species has its own personality and its own way of living, and the more I watch, the more I realize how much there is to discover. In a way, my Birdfy story has come full circle. The little girl who was fascinated by the Blue Jays, Cardinals, and hummingbirds visiting her grandparents' feeders grew up to become the person who now fills her own backyard with feeders, cameras, and birdhouses. The fascination I had as a child never really went away—it just grew into something much bigger. Birdfy has allowed me to experience that childhood fascination in an entirely new way. It has helped me slow down, pay attention, and see the incredible world of birds that has been around me all along. I may have started with one bird feeder, but I ended up finding a passion. My Birdfy story Don't kick me.. but..I didn't grow up loving birds!Then.. at the end of 2025, I saw a friend post a video of birds in a birdbath she had in her yard. I was immediately in awe and wanted one.I've always been a gadget gal, also love being able to watch nature and see things you just can't on a normal day.So, to be able to see these cute nuggets of feathers taking a dip, sign me up! I purchased a birdbath (it was winter- so not exactly the best time lol) , set it up, joined the Birdfy FB community and just loved seeing all the posts, photos, videos and helpful info! I then bought a Birdfy birdhouse (sadly still no tenants but hoping this next spring they'll make a home. My Birdfy story began when I discovered the Birdfy device and how up close and personal you could see the birds! It was amazing to see! My husband purchased it for me as a gift and then purchased the Birdfy Birdhouse (with camera) as another gift because I was enjoying it so much! I got to watch birds building their nest and feeding their young, such a treat to watch! Then I upgraded to the Birdfy Duo, then added another birdhouse, and a few more birdbaths, since providing a water source for the birds is very important, especially during the cold winter months when water is scarce because it freezes with the extreme temperatures. I love the closeups where I can see them in such great detail! A few of my favourites include the closeups of my male and female Cardinals taken recently!I get to watch a great variety of birds every single day! They add a smile to my face with every visit! I feel like they are all my little pets and with that comes feeding them every day and providing fresh water for them every day, even through the harsh winter months as well (and we get extreme temperatures here in Toronto, Canada!). I’ve learned so many different things about different birds, their individual behaviours, their food preferences and the times they are most active during the day (depending on the season). It’s very exciting when the Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks, Orioles and Goldfinches visit during certain times of the year! I look forward to those visits too! Here’s my Birdfy story. I am a 69 year old, retired, recent breast cancer survivor. The last few years have not been easy with treatments, surgeries and doctor’s appointments. In my free time I noticed on social media many posts from people who had bird feeders with cameras. I thought maybe this would be something I would enjoy also. I mentioned this to my family. So, for Mother’s Day this year, my husband, sons and grandsons bought me a Birdfy bird feeder. My husband put it up in our backyard, and from that moment on, I was hooked! Birdfy has changed the way I bird watch and interact with nature throughout my property. I am able to observe and understand different species behavior and able to document the variety and number of species observed. Before I retired I always loved feeding the birds. After I retired, for our anniversary, my husband bought me my first feeder. I found the perfect spot to put it.... In a couple of days I got my first bird. I saved my first bird capture...a Downy Woodpecker. I now enjoy my feeder, my Hummingbird feeder and Birdbath. Something to Look Forward to I didn’t know how much of my life I had lost until the birds gave me something back. I'm twenty-five years old, and I live in Rhode Island. Chronic illness hit me hard. It didn’t just hurt. It kept me from doing the things I loved. I lost things one by one until there was barely anything left. I became isolated, and the emotional toll was much steeper than the physical one. My days became a monotonous cycle of managing my health and doing whichever chores I could, without ever feeling like I was doing enough. The struggles didn’t end. They didn’t go away. But I changed. I received a Birdfy feeder as an early birthday gift. When I set up my feeder, something unexpected happened: my world began to light up. The birds came. First, there were the brave little chickadees, cautiously checking out this strange new installation. Then came my first Northern Cardinal. She was bald. Yes, bald. There is something particularly jarring about seeing your first bald bird. I had expected the beautiful red cardinal I had seen in pictures, but instead, there she was—crestless and completely unbothered, living her best life. And I loved her. Later, that very same cardinal made a nest in my garden. Three wonderful nestlings hatched- three tiny pink wigglers that the average person probably wouldn't call cute. But I adored them. I watched them get fed every 15-30 minutes, from dawn to dusk. By the second and third days, they were noticeably bigger, and feathers began to appear. I held my breath when their parents didn't show for two whole hours on their fourth day. I watched their eyes crack open on the fifth. And I am still watching their journey now. Suddenly, I wasn't just watching birds anymore. I was getting to know them. I was experiencing their lives. I heard my first White-breasted Nuthatch “beep.” I learned the sound of their tiny feet as they scampered face-first down my tree. I began recognizing familiar visitors and noticing their individual behaviors and personalities. Every notification became a little invitation to stop whatever I was doing and look. With every new visitor, I found myself being drawn further into the Birdfy world. I felt inspired. I felt connected. I felt alive. And I wanted more. I don’t always have “good days.” Some days, simply managing my health takes everything I have. But my small efforts—filling the feeder, caring for my garden, going outside when I could—began to feel meaningful because I knew they mattered to the lives unfolding around me. The birds gave me a reason to push myself to do a little more. And suddenly, I was going outside more than before. I had something to look forward to every day. I had bird goals. I started learning. I started recognizing some of my regulars. I became curious about behaviors I had never noticed before. I began paying attention to sounds, movements, seasons, and little details that I might once have overlooked. I realized that I had been surrounded by a world full of life all along. Birdfy simply gave me a way to see it—even on my bad days. To me, Birdfy isn't just about seeing birds. It’s about the whole experience. It’s about connecting with nature and sharing that experience with a warm, supportive community. It’s the excitement of seeing a new bird for the first time. It’s the wonder and curiosity that comes from witnessing an interesting behavior. It’s the inspiration to learn more. It’s the happiness that comes from seeing your favorite birds return. And sometimes, it’s just laughing at their silly antics. Birds brought a whole range of colorful emotions back into my daily life—emotions I hadn’t realized I was missing. My Birdfy story began when my husband and I had purchased our first home. I have always been a bird lover my whole life, but once we moved from a third floor apartment to a home with a yard, I was able to really begin my birding journey! I did alot of research before I purchased my first Birdfy camera. I was interested and looking for the best Bird camera on the market! Birdfy had so many great options (from lower priced to higher priced) to choose from that I was so impressed with. I read reviews on all of them and ultimately decided to purchase the Birdfy Pro Lite! It was easy to assemble and easy to use in the app. I quickly became obsessed with being able to see what birds visited me! I then started buying more..and more birdfy products! When my husband gave me my first Birdfy, neither of us realized how much it would change my life. I moved from another country to be with him, leaving behind my family, friends and everything familiar. While I wouldn't change that decision for anything, military life hasn't always been easy. Between deployments, PCS moves and constantly worrying about something, there were times when I felt incredibly lonely and burnt out. Without family or close friends nearby, my mental health took a hit and I struggled to find something that was just for me. Then Birdfy came into my life, thanks to my Husband. My mom loves to watch the birds. Due to some mobility difficulties, she can’t get out birdwatching in forests and fields and marshes. So, her birdwatching is mostly from her back deck or through the windows of her house. I bought her a Birdfy Nest Ebony so she could see the whole nesting process if a bird decided to use the house. She was absolutely thrilled and was so excited when birds started checking out the house. She really hoped one would choose it to nest in. Well, she got her wish and then some! A chickadee was the first tenant and 5 fledged from that brood. It brought my mom and I so much joy to watch the entire process and we learned so much about their behavior. We didn’t even have time to clean out the chickadee nest after the babies fledged before a house wren moved in and cleaned it out to build a nest. The wren nest was so different from the chickadee! Another round of eggs and 5 little wrens eventually fledged. What a beautiful experience to witness and to share with my mom. I received my first Birdfy device as a birthday gift from my son and daughter-in-love. My Birdfy story starts sad, unfortunately. My name is Amber, and I’ve lived in Mesquite, Texas my entire life. I’d always had a casual fascination with birds. I’d notice them, admire them for a moment, and then move on with my day. That started to change on June 24, 2025, when my older sister, Candice, committed suicide at the age of 41 years and 4 days old. At her funeral, there were several beautiful barn swallow nests at the entrance to the chapel. We saw Hummingbirds at the cemetery. On a day filled with overwhelming grief, those birds brought brief moments of beauty and fascination that somehow cut through the darkness, if only for a few moments. So, I started paying a little more attention. I still wasn’t actively looking for birds but I noticed and appreciated them more often. Then, in an impossibly short amount of time, my 41st birthday arrived. Candice and I were only 10 months and 22 days apart. I took the day off work to enjoy the last of the spring weather on my back patio and to grieve my sister. I had reached the same age she was when she died. Five days later, I would be older than she ever was. I would be older than my big sister. It was a sentence I never imagined I would have to say. My son, Noah, saw how much I was struggling and started pointing out the birds in the trees, hoping to distract me. We grabbed a bag of nut and berry mix we already had in the pantry and spread it out on a plate. He even pulled up YouTube videos of the calls of the Blue Jay, the Cardinal, and the finch to see if we could attract any visitors. Nothing came. We tried a different food that we thought they might like better. Still nothing. Disappointed doesn’t even begin to describe it. Then Noah looked at me and said, “We should get a bird feeder.” From that moment on, he started sending me links almost daily. Finally, on the day I turned 41 years and 5 days old and officially became the oldest sibling in my family, I gave in. I ordered a relatively inexpensive camera bird feeder and a bag of birdseed, just to see what would happen. I needed something to keep my mind distracted during the quiet moments. We installed it on our backyard fence that evening, fully expecting it might take days, or even weeks, before a bird trusted it enough to visit. Instead, at exactly 6:21 the next morning, our resident male Northern Cardinal arrived for breakfast. We named him Freddy. Not long after, his mate arrived, and she became Fanny. Then the feeder became a revolving door of visitors. House Finches, Carolina Wrens, Tufted Titmice, chickadees, doves, starlings, the occasional grackle, and even a Brown-headed Cowbird or two. Every day seemed to bring something new. A robin in the yard. A Baltimore Oriole flashing through the trees. I felt this sharp spark of joy, every time a notification came through. I was completely hooked. That was the moment I realized I had found something I didn’t even know I had been searching for. Bird feeding wasn’t replacing my grief, but it was giving me somewhere else to put my attention. Instead of waking up each morning wondering how I was going to make it through another day, I found myself wondering who might visit the feeder next. A couple of weeks after Candice’s funeral, my mom, who is disabled and had been living with her, moved to eastern Pennsylvania to live with my brother. Overnight, we went from seeing each other regularly to living over 1,300 miles apart. Birds became one of the things that kept us connected. At first, I shared the live feed from my little Amazon feeder with her so she could watch the birds in my backyard. Before long, she was just as fascinated as I was. I had spent weeks researching better setups and eventually decided Birdfy was exactly what I wanted for my yard. I bought the standalone camera, the Bird Bath with Stand, and the Feeder Pro Duo 2. Then I packed up my original camera feeder and shipped them to my mom so she could experience it herself. I ordered her a pole and a little suet cage too. Now we share our Birdfy feeds with each other every day. We constantly text back and forth about new visitors, unusual behavior, better seed blends, and feeder placement ideas. My own little setup has continued to grow, too. I had quickly moved my original feeder onto a baffled pole (the squirrels and the possums made it very clear that fence placement was a bad idea), added a ground feeder, a finch feeder, and a suet cage. My favorites - the Red-bellied and Downy woodpeckers started making regular appearances. We’ve named our regular visitors (the woodpeckers are Woody and Bullseye). We notice when one of them doesn’t show up for a day or two, and we really notice it when they don’t like a particular seed blend we’ve put out. My husband, my sons, my mom, my brother, and my nephew have all become invested in these incredible little animals and their surprisingly unique personalities. My mom wants to switch to Birdfy feeders as well because the quality and the AI recognition is leaps and bounds better. And I already have my eyes on a couple more feeders and a hummingbird feeder for myself. In the 2.5 months since I turned 41 years and 5 days old, I have discovered the personalities of different types of birds, how to recognize the juveniles from the males from the females, when a mockingbird is fooling me into thinking some crazily unique bird is in my yard, how to know when a hawk is in the area because of the way the birds’ behavior changes, and how to set up different stations in my yard for the specific types of birds I want to attract and deter. I’m beginning to build a garden specifically for insect and berry eating birds. My dad just bought his first one, and we gifted our niece with one for her birthday. This hobby doesn’t just bring the birds to you, it brings a whole community to you. I’ve lived in the same house for 19 years. For 19 years, I had no idea this much beauty existed right outside my back door. Birdfy didn’t just introduce me to bird feeding. It changed the way my family spends time together. It gave my mom and me something joyful to share across the country. It gave Noah and me a hobby that began with him trying to help his mom through the hardest season of her life. And it reminded me that even after unimaginable loss, there is still wonder waiting outside your window every single morning.
