About Birdfy DIY: Create with Nature

It All Started in an Ohio Backyard
It All Started in an Ohio Backyard... With Our Birdfy Friend, Jim.
By day, Jim is a tech consultant, podcast host, and a seasoned maker who helps big companies perfect their products. But in his off-hours, he’s in his own backyard, using his tech and his two hands to build a beautiful sanctuary where nature can thrive. Birds, butterflies, bats, and bees are all regular residents.
Two years ago, his search for a “smart bird feeder with a camera” led him to Birdfy. But in his hands, it became so much more than just a way to watch birds. It was the security camera for his front yard, a window to check the weather at home while traveling, and it even accidentally captured the moment Jim took a tumble in the yard. Most importantly, it became a launchpad for him and his partner, Gillie, to get creative, live more sustainably and take care of the living creatures around them.
As a maker with multiple 3D printers, a CNC machine, and a laser cutter in his workshop, Jim had a brilliant suggestion for us when the Birdfy team visited his home this past June. “You guys should open-source the 3D design files for your accessories,” he said. “It won't just help users save money and solve problems—it will make them feel trusted. That's how you build real goodwill and create a community."
That conversation was a lightbulb moment for us. We realized that the ultimate goal of our products isn't just the product itself, but the warmth and connection it brings to people. Our products can become a part of your life, and even an extension of your own creativity.
And just like that, the Birdfy DIY Community was born.
This is an open community for all the “Jims” out there—whether you’re a tech wizard, a craft lover, a nature observer, or just someone who loves to create. We’re opening up our design files and encouraging you to share, build, and collaborate. We hope this is a place where you can create your own “The Bird Side of Life” story.
Just like Jim and Gillie, you can start with a feeder and go on to build bee hotels and bat boxes, creating a sustainable, friendly, and smart ecosystem.
Welcome to Birdfy DIY. Let’s create with nature and explore what’s possible—together.
