    🦜 Engineer to Bird Champion

Ever met someone so passionate about something that it completely changed their life? Say hello to Dave Katz, an engineer who goes by Fritz. After wrapping up his career, he got totally hooked on hummingbirds, and when we say hooked, we mean it. He’s fascinated by these tiny powerhouses, pointing out that they’re the only birds on the planet that can fly backward and hover, thanks to their unique figure-eight wing motion.

But Fritz didn’t just stop at watching them. His engineering brain kicked in, and he started designing and even manufacturing his own awesome hummingbird feeder hats! His passion has taken him all over the world—from Costa Rica to Colombia—all in the quest to photograph these incredible birds. He’s even got a trip to Brazil lined up. 📷 Tech Meets Passion

And it gets cooler. Driven by curiosity, Fritz developed a special trap to track hummingbirds for a nesting study, and it’s so innovative that he landed a patent and a grant from the Birdfy fund to support his project. He also uses a Birdfy Hum Feeder Duo, loving the timestamp feature because it lets him know the exact moment the first hummingbird of the season arrives.
